to a three-day official visit to neighbouring Suriname
Jagdeo, Natural Resources Minister, Vickram Bharrat, and Guyana’s Ambassador to
Suriname, Keith George, held talks Monday with Surinamese President, Chandrikapersaud
Santokhi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation,

Suriname’s Presidential Palace.

The visit by the Guyanese team follows a high-level visit led by the Surinamese President
and a number of business officials to Guyana last month, where the two sides recognise a vast
array of areas for cooperation between the CARICOM independent states.
Guyana and Suriname have especially highlighted environment and common climate change
challenges and the two countries have pledged to hammer out a common position ahead of
the 26th United Nation’s Conference on Climate Change to be hosted by the United Kingdom
in partnership with Italy from October 31 to November 12 in the Scottish Event Campus
(SEC) in Glasgow, UK.
“We have agreed that we’re going to jointly approach the area of environment and climate
change, to come up with a common strategy for both Guyana and Suriname especially in
preparation for COP26 and also in exploring the possibility of merging our forest asset in the
carbon credit market,” President Ali had explained during Santokhi’s visit.

He had too that the two countries would jointly market their forests, as carbon credit, which is
a tradable permit or certificate allowing its holders the right to emit a ton of carbon dioxide or
an equivalent of another greenhouse gas.

While in Paramaribo, Jagdeo and team will also raise the issue of sustainability of the
environment with his Surinamese counterparts.
