The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be spearheading the completion of a multi-purpose sport facility at the Albion Cricket Ground, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six).

Minister, Hon. Charles Ramson Jr. explained that improving and providing access to sport facilities is an integral part of the President’s vision for youth development.

“The community needs this service [and] they need access to that kind of facility because we’ve got a lot of talent in Berbice and all across the country. We will develop a programme in combination with the facilities to help us produce world-class athletes,” Minister Ramson Jr. said.

The sum of $185 million has been allocated to the National Sports Commission to support the establishment of other sport stadiums in Pomeroon-Supenaam (Region Two) and Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region Ten), along with the Guyana-China friendship park. Initial works on these projects are expected to start this year.

The Minister explained that there were limited to no access to sport facilities under the previous administration, and that stymied sport development.

“The country should be happy to know that access to facilities is key as to how I will be driving part of our Ministry’s policy on behalf of the Government,” the Sport Minister said.

These projects are in keeping with the PPP/C’s Manifesto promise to provide the requisite sporting facilities for recreation and to develop local sporting talent.
