New York City Council honours Georgetown Mayor

Mayor Ubraj Narine with his citation

THE CITY COUNCIL OF NEW YORK has honoured Georgetown Mayor, His Worship Ubraj
Narine for exemplary leadership, his work and contributions to the people and capital city of
Guyana.
Mayor Narine who is currently on official business to the United States of America (USA), was
presented his award by Council member, Ms. Adrienne Adams.
The citation for the award reads:
“Whereas a great city is only as great as those persons who give exemplary to their
communities, whether through unique personal achievement in their professional or other
endeavours or simply through a lifetime of philanthropy and community service and
Whereas such service which is truly the lifeblood of the community and the city, so often goes
unrecognised and unrewarded now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED that as a duly elected member of the York City Council, I
recognise that in Mayor Ubraj Narine we have an outstanding citizen, one whom is worthy of the
esteem of both our community and the great City of New York.”

Narine told www.aroundtheregions.com that he is honoured by the “tangible” recognition from
the NY City Council, which he said reflects the love, confidence and trust that many have and
continues to express in his leadership in a toxic local environment.
“I feel very pleased to serve the people of the city of Georgetown and this honour is really not
me but the people of Georgetown,” the local Mayor said.

“I will continue to serve them well. I will continue to make a representation for the well-being of
the city, for their benefits. I was awarded this award due to my outstanding work that I am
currently doing in the city serving the people of the community, civic duty towards my people of
the city and to represent them, I will continue to do that,” Narine declared.
The Georgetown Mayor and the NY Council member discussed a wide range of issues about the
two cities, including what Narine termed as the ‘unfair’ and racial treatment of afro Guyanese,
resulting in scores fired by the government since its accession to office last August.
Narine also laid bare his deep worry about the partisan politics and economic warfare the
government is unleashing against the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
For her part, the NY City Councillor member explored a number of avenues for possible
cooperation between the two cities.
Narine invited his counterpart to visit Georgetown to help deepen the ties of cooperation.
Some 140,000 Guyanese are reportedly living in New York City.
