GPSU’s Message for Arrival day 2024

GPSU Headquarters

On May 5th, as we get together to commemorate Arrival Day, we must embark on a journey of introspection, with a desire to craft a better future for our nation that was built upon this land following the discontent and savagery of others. This day honours our ancestors and their unique cultures, traditions, and so much more that was brought with them from diverse parts of our world. It is a day to honour their struggles, celebrate the diversity of our nation, and acknowledge their tenacity.

Arrival Day serves as a somber reminder of our shared past that has been replete with both achievements and disappointments. Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) reminds the nation that Guyana’s history is a patchwork of many ethnic origins, which brought to bear differing cultures, customs and traditions. Notwithstanding this, each ethnic group has enhanced our shared past and defined our identity, adding to the vibrant fabric of our nation.

As we observe and celebrate Arrival Day 2024, let us also reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and harmonious society. Let us embrace the principles of unity in diversity, recognizing that our differences are our greatest strength. Let us reject bigotry, discrimination, and intolerance in all its forms, and strive to create a society where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to fulfill their potential. GPSU’s Race Relations Committee continues to monitor complains of discrimination reported in the print and non-print media, in addition to that which is logged at the Trade Union Secretariat by Workers.

According to the assessment of these matters, it is GPSU’s foregone conclusion that the Nation is still plagued by ethnic based challenges so long after our oppressors left these shores and this plague is kept alive to further the self-serving needs of a few.

There are socioeconomic disparities, political divisions, and a myriad of obstacles to the path of real progress as a nation. Yet, as we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from the resilience of our ancestors and the spirit of unity that defines us as Guyanese.

As we mark Arrival Day, GPSU encourages the populace to celebrate our diversity, honour our heritage, and renew our commitment to building a brighter future for all Guyanese. Let us stand united in our determination to create a society where every individual can flourish, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religious background or other circumstances. Together, let us strive to fulfill the promise of our nation’s Motto: “One People, One Nation, One Destiny.”

Happy Arrival Day 2024!
