At local markets prices for chicken, beef, and pork remain stable

It has been revealed that prices for chicken, beef and pork at the local markets remain stable on the market. In media related reports visits conducted at the Bourda and La Penitence markets, a number of vendors were quizzed about the prices for meat during the past few months.

Tony Anthony, proprietor of Tony’s Pork Shop at the Bourda Market was quoted as saying that pork prices remain the same compared to the past months. “My pork is $600 GUY a pound and pork scarce you know” he said.

Fish, meat prices stable

Meanwhile, Shawn Rankin owner of Robin’s Halaal Meat Centre at the Bourda Market pointed out that the price for chicken remains stable for the past months. “Chicken is $480 GUY a pound right now, and $640 for beef,” he said.

Naeem Bacchus proprietor of Saleem Meat Centre at the La Penitence market said, “Chicken is $500 GUY and beef is $640 GUY…. the price for the meat stable for the longest while now. We sell by the pound because people don’t want to pay the extra for the kg.”

John Springer a vendor at the La Penitence market was also quoted as saying  that his chicken prices have been at $480 for the longest while. “It’s normal. It’s $480 GUY, $500 GUY if you want it cut up. It has been increased but I try to fight the market, I can’t beat down my customers them.”

Meat prices in local markets remain stable

As such, the Agriculture Ministry early Sunday revealed that chicken prices are stable at various supermarkets. Chicken is sold between $390 and $400 GUYand retailed at $426 GUY at the Bounty Supermarket. At Royal, chicken is wholesaled between $360 to $390 GUY.

Meanwhile, it was noted that at Arjune’s Chicken Depot, Stratsphey, East Coast Demerara, chicken is wholesaled between $290 to $300 and $360 GUY at a retail price while at Pompy’s in Corentyne, Berbice it is being wholesaled at $300 to $360 GUY with the retail price being $400 to $460 GUY.

Additionally, checks at the Parika Market and several butcheries and meat centres in West Demerara also revealed that the price for meats has been stable for several months now.
