LEOLA Narine keeps attracting discrimination.
At least this is the feeling of Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of many of her colleagues of
Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) where Narine has distinguished herself a long-serving,
dedicated and consummate professional.
When Dollette Powers, Principal Assistant Secretary (PAS) Finance was given the nod over
Narine for the Acting Deputy Regional Executive Officer (REO) post due to the retirement of
Maylene Stephen her RDC colleagues could no longer keep their hurt and outrage silent.
“We are very disappointed over the current treatment being meted out to the AREO and myself
and the other Councillors who sit on the RDC from the PPP side. We intend to raise our concerns
at the highest level as Ms. Narine has been very effective and very professional in her duties over
the years as AREO and this should be corrected immediately,” Councillor Kristy Duggin said.
“Ms. Narine’s performance over the years has been significant and enormous and it is the view
of many that she is suitable and the right candidate for the job of Deputy Regional Executive
Officer (DREO). It is no secret that Ms. Narine is such an asset to the region in a huge way,”
Duggin reiterated.
RDC officials point to several past mis-steps of Powers which cost the national treasury hefty
sums and are amazed that she continues to be favoured.
“It’s no secret the REO that we have in the Region doesn’t know what he really has to do and
because Ms. Powers is doing his job, he is forced to be sucked in to whatever she is doing,” a
source said.
RDC officials were looking forward for fresh wind with the appointment of Mr. Dwight John as
the new REO, but say the toxicity remains.
“Instead of coming in and better understanding what has to be done the REO came in and seem
bent on stifling the AREO. Instead of working along with the AREO as a team he has allowed
himself to be misguided by elements with the RDC whose only agenda is to create mischief,”
another source said.
A senior government official has expressed disappointment over John’s performance and
wants an urgent meeting with him, a source told www.aroundtheregions.com.
