INCUMBENTS NICK ESTWICK AND OWEN BOWLING WILL COMPETE FOR
THE POST OF TOSHAO of Muritaro when Amerindian communities across Guyana go to the
polls on May 2.
Nominations for Toshao were held a week ago.
Estwick is currently Muritaro’s Deputy Toshao of the Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten)
community and Bowling, the Secretary. But there is ongoing ‘bad blood’ between the two
contestants for the top village position.
Estwick blasted Bowling and current Toshao, Ms. Loretta Fiedtkou, over some questionable
decisions since the A Partnership for National Unity, Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC)
coalition was in government and ignored.
The Irfaan Ally administration has so far been imitating the APNU+AFC community members
complain.
Residents told www.aroundtheregions.com that they wrote both administrations and intreated
their public officials, including current Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Ms. Pauline Sukhai,
without any success.
Outraged Muritaro residents have theorised that Toshoa Fiedtkou’s position as a senior member
on the National Toshoa Council (NTC) under both administrations has inoculated her against
their bitter public complaints.
A groundswell of residents’ support helped push Estwick into the race to help bring change to
the village which he complained suffered perennially because of blatant acts of dishonesty,
rampant corruption and victimisation overseen by the embattled and controversial Toshoa.
Residents firmly believe Estwick will win.
“Toshoa Fiedtkou cannot run again as she has served two consecutive terms and the constitution
prohibits anyone from holding any post for more than two consecutive terms at any given time.
What she is seeking is to be elected on the council and maybe at the next election she may run
again for Toshoa but for now she can’t,” a resident told this media house.
The community is elated to see the back of Fiedtkou as Toshoa.
“We, the residents, no longer have to worry about the many corrupt and illegal acts taking place
within our community. (We will) elect persons that are responsible in ensuring that the welfare
and issues facing the residents of Muritaro are properly addressed. Even if she (Fiedtkou) could
have run again I am sure that no one would be interested in reelecting her as it's evident that she
is selfish,” another resident said.
However, Fiedtkou is one of 10 persons contesting for the six seats on the Council.
Nominees are; Jermaine Piggott; Cheryl Fiedtkou/Duggin; Lester Piggott; Clorine Bowen;
Devon Jones; Paul Jones; Ryan Piggott; Latoya Fiedtkou; Selvis Spencer, and Loretta Fiedtkou.
More than 190 residents from the community of some 300 are expected to vote next month.
Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dwight John is expected to be the Returning Officer for
the polls.
