The residents of St Cuthbert’s Mission in Region Four, are elated over the donation of fuel made
by Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Lennox Shuman.
According to the Toshao of the Amerindian village, Beverly Clenkian, MP Shuman made the
donation of eight barrels of fuel, which she said will ensure that each resident has free electricity
for the month. She said that there are some 1500 residents, and they welcome the gesture
considering the economic challenges that many are faced with because of the ongoing pandemic.
“As the Toshao I am elated like my fellow residents over the gesture of our very own Mr.
Lennox Shuman provided eight barrels of fuel that will ensure the entire village gets free
electricity. This is a significant assistance that we are grateful and thankful for as we are
currently on a two weeks lockdown and based on the increased positive cases that we are
recording, I foresee this lockdown being extended,” Clenkian said.
The Toshao noted that each barrel of fuel is worth about 50,000.00, thus resulting in the donation
being some 400,000.00. This, she said is a very significant donation, pointing out that thus far
only CDC had assisted the community. The Toshao admitted that she has engaged the Deputy
Regional Executive Officer (DREO), Deryck Persaud and the Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr
Gavinash Persaud with a view of providing some assistance to the residents. “The village is on a
total lockdown so nobody can come in or go out and we do need some assistance. We really need
help but we have all agreed that the lockdown is the best thing considering the fact that residents'
health are at risk and we want to ensure that their health and well-being remains the priority of
the Council,” the Toshao said.
She revealed that they welcome any assistance and or donation that anyone may want to make,
noting that it will certainly assist the residents in cushioning the challenges that they are faced
with. She disclosed that irrespective of the size and amount of the donation it will go a
significant way in helping the residents. The Toshao noted that based on what many residents do
for a living in the community it was severely impacted as a result of the COVID pandemic, thus
resulting in many residents being unemployed.
“COVID has hit St. Cuthbert’s Mission in a very significant way and many residents who once
were employed are unemployed. This has impacted on the community as there aren’t many
options for residents who are not working, so I am appealing for whatever assistance that persons
can provide to do so as we eagerly welcome it. The assistance by Mr. Lennox Shuman is one that
we are eternally grateful for. We the residents know that having the light bills covered for the
month is certainly something that everyone is thankful and happy about,” Toshao Clenkian
declared.
