A TWO-MEMBER DELEGATION FROM ST CUTHBERT’S MISSION HELD A
SUCCESSFUL MEETING WITH TOURISM MINISTER ONEIDGE WALROND with
the latter pledging her ministry’s backing for the vision unveiled by Toshao Timothy Andrews.
“The meeting with the Minister was a very successful one as we listed our ideas and plans as it
relates to the community, and she informed us that she loved the ideas and initiatives and assured
us about her ministry’s commitment in supporting them. The minister was very excited and
promised to help us in bringing these projects and programmes that we are seeking to execute to
fruition,” Toshao Andrews said.
The Toshao was accompanied to the meeting by Councilor Deon Andrews, who bears
responsibility for Culture, Tourism and Social Coordination.
St Cuthbert’s Mission, a growing community on the Mahaica River, needs revenue-generating
and employment-creating projects to sustain its 1500 residents.
“We also discussed a number of indicators, which will aid in bringing about women
empowerment as we reiterated to the Minister the high number of single parent mothers that we
have. Further, our urgency of reducing this through the creation of opportunities, Toshao
Andrews told www.aroundtheregions.com
In addition to these, “We intend to improve on the aspect of empowering our women more so
that they can aid in the holistic development and growth of the community. Too many of our
women in the community are unemployed, just being housewives, while others are making craft
only. There is so much potential within the village that will allow us to create jobs to ensure that
those unemployed and or who are housewives can garner employment,” the village leader
reiterated.
For her part, Minister Walrond echoed similar sentiments and reaffirmed her passion and
determination for jobs creation, while acknowledging that the community can enhance its
tourism products and projects. He said that she facilitated a meeting with officials of Guyana
Tourism Authority (GTA) who also assured the villagers of their commitment to assist.
“During our meeting with GTA they committed to helping and assisting us and echoed the
minister's sentiments of enhancing and further growing the community. This will be done
through a number of tourism-related projects and programmes,” Toshao Andrews said.
“I would say that with both the Minister and GTA it was truly a successful day, as we are
now in a better position in knowing how to move forward and we are determined in getting
things done,” Andrews reaffirmed.
