Region Ten Education Officer urges other regions to maximize Facebook usage

Acting Regional Education Officer (REdO), Ms La Shanna Anderson

As Guyana joins with the rest of the world in executing several projects and programmes through
several online platforms, an Education Officer has firm words of advice for several of her
colleagues.
Regional Education Officer La Shanna Anderson believes firmly that with social media and the
internet increasing in its efficiency and effectiveness, she is urging her colleagues to maximize
the usage of these platforms more. Anderson in an interview with www.aroundtheregions.com
spoke about the importance of education departments utilizing Facebook more so as to reach the
public in effectively disseminating information. This advice comes on the heels of Region Ten
Education department using their Facebook page to aggressively meet the public, staff and
students considering that there has been a significant reduction in physical interactions.
“I am encouraging other regions to develop creative ideas to get information out to the public
and to share with the public what they are doing in terms of education,” Anderson suggested.
Pointing out that the modality in teaching and learning have changed, Anderson urged her
colleagues to be positive in adapting to change. She noted that remaining relevant is of
paramount importance. “The modality of reaching and teaching persons have changed
significantly and we have to be able to adapt, we have to be innovative, we have to be creative
and we have to be responsive to change because things are not static, everything is changing and
so we got to be able to adapt. We really want to keep abreast with what is happening in the
world. We got to be able to use these technologies to share information and to learn,” she
stressed.
Admitting that her region, Region Ten, has seen significant benefits of their decision to
maximize the usage of Facebook, Anderson issued a passionate appeal for her colleagues to
emulate what Region Ten is doing. This, she noted, will significantly aid in the Regions being
able to keep in touch with their teachers and students effectively. She expressed the view that
more persons are using Facebook as a means of staying in touch and communicating with others
considering the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic.
“I really believe that each region should utilize Facebook because if you look generally, social
media is where everybody is because we are getting to do face to face interactions and everybody
is gravitating to Facebook as a source of information and entertainment,” she said.
Anderson declared that education departments must see the importance of Facebook and other
social media platforms as a vehicle of continuing the education growth and development.
“You have to be able to use the available media to get out your information, to communicate,
share information and to involve the public in whatever you may be doing. This will certainly
enhance your development and of course to promote and support education delivery,” she
argued.
