REGION TEN (UPPER DEMERARA/BERBICE) CHAIRMAN MR. DERON ADAMS
TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID 19 forcing an indefinite postponement of Thursday’s
statutory meeting in the bauxite-mining town.
Adams learnt of his health status after taking the Covid-19 test as a prerequisite to travel to the
US to attend his father’s funeral.
Knowledgeable sources told www.aroundtheregions.com that the RC was asymptomatic leaving
them in a state of shock after his test results were made known.
Councillors were divided on the decision to postpone Thursday’s statutory Regional Democratic
Council (RDC) meeting indefinitely.
Alliance For Change (AFC) Councilor, Mr. Norris King argued in the affirmative because of
health and safety concerns for other Councillors and staff.
“I think in all fairness to the people of Linden and Region 10, more so the Councilors who are
elected representatives it’s only fair that if there seem to be a threat in terms of one’s health, we
lead the way in setting the example for the rest of our community to follow. Given the fact that a
few other members were in direct contact over the past two to three days we think it best to
highlight the health issue and the precautionary issues and measures need to be heightened at this
time,” King stressed.
He warned that the country is faced with a serious threat and should avoid treating the current
threat lightly.
“Lots of time we take things for granted until it hits home, kids are being kidnapped, young
people are going missing and there are people that don’t play no mind because they have their
children at home. It is not until it hits home, sometimes it has to hit home at people's doorsteps
before they wake up and I think that we do not want to take that risk (COVID) in having to reach
that stage in Linden,” the AFC Councillor offered.
King was elated that while there were differences in opinions, the Region Ten RDC showed
maturity by taking the unanimous decision not to meet.
“In anything there will be differences in opinions but I am happy that we had a majority vote, it
was a consensus position by the Councillors because this is the Councillors meeting and so the
Councillors voted on having the meeting rescheduled,” King declared.
Regional Vice Chairman, Mr. Douglas Gittens, who acted as Chairman for Thursday’s
meeting bluntly refused to comment when www.aroundtheregions.com sought an
interview.
