THE Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of East Berbice – Corentyne (Region Six) is helping
refurbish the Mara Police Station and its approach bridge.
Mr. Jairam Ramlakhan, Police Commander in the ‘Ancient’ County requested help from
Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Narindra Persaud, who immediately obliged.
“Commander Ramlakhan contacted me with a request stating that there is a police station
building but they are unable to properly utilize it owing to several issues. I immediately agreed to
assist as the police in Region Six are seeking not only to improve their relationship with the
public but also to forge a more cohesive relationship between them (police) and the public. This
motivated me to find ways through the RDC we assisted,” Persaud said.
Concerned residents approached Ramnattan soon after his appointment as Berbice Police
Commander to repair the rundown station and the dilapidated bridge as part of a wider plan to
arrest the spike in criminal behaviour happening at the time.
The refurbishment to the two structures also formed part of the community’s plan to help bridge
the divide between the police and the public.
The RDC commenced a series of activities leading to the beautification of the environment
contiguous to the station making it easier for residents to get to the police to reports incidences of
criminality.
“I had committed to visiting the area with him the next time that he visited as I wanted to not
only see firsthand what was happening but also to personally assist with the cleanup efforts. As
such, initiatives like these will see the RDC being determined to help under my stewardship,”
Persaud offered.
Said he: “I have collaborated with every single agency that has expressed an interest in working
along with me as we seek to create holistic growth and development within this region. I have
thus far worked along with the police, Cricket Board, GWI and several other agencies and
organizations as I have sat down and sought avenues and ways that we at the RDC can work along with those that have expressed an interest. I see my role as REO as one of critical
importance because when I assist them, I am helping the people indirectly as through these many
agencies, organisations and groups it’s another way of us (RDC) and by extension the
Government of Guyana reaching out to assist them.”
The REO is committed to a long-lasting relationship with the police, declaring that his role is not
only to issue contracts and build buildings but also to create a wholesome environment in for
residents.
“My ultimate goal and objective are to ensure that the people of Region Six benefit significantly
from all of this, that is why I am working along with all groups, individuals and organisations
that want to work along with us here,” REO Persaud declared.
