Region Seven COVID-19 cases decrease

Medical Superintendent at the Bartica Regional Hospital, Dr. Jillian Jardine

Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region Seven) has seen a decrease in COVID-19 cases.

This announcement was made by Medical Superintendent at the Bartica Regional Hospital, Dr. Jillian Jardine, during an interview with DPI.

Dr. Jardine explained that while the positive cases have decreased, residents still need to adhere to all safety measures.

She attributed the reduction in positive cases to the change in attitudes from the people who are now more serious about taking steps to prevent contracting the disease.

Dr. Jardine said hinterland outreaches and rapid testing have been priorities for the region.

“Region Seven is not only Bartica. So, we have teams going out to the different hinterland areas and mining camps and doing tests, and as such, we can have an idea of what is going on in Region Seven,” she explained.

Additionally, patients are separated based on their symptoms to prevent non-COVID patients from interacting with positive cases.

Dr. Jardine reiterated that despite the decrease in COVID-19 cases, residents must ensure they follow all safety guidelines to prevent a second wave.

“This is our time to be more careful and cautious because COVID-19 and any pandemic, you can have waves…So my advice is to stick to the guidelines: wear a mask, practice social distancing, practice proper hand hygiene often and please stay at home and only go out when necessary,” she emphasised.

As of November 1, Region Seven had recorded 377 positive cases.
