Region One gets 52 new CHWs

MORE THAN 50 COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS (CHWs) in Barima-Waini
(Region One) recently from a 14-week programme that will help enhance work in the interior
sector.
Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony who attend the graduation ceremony told the former trainees
the sector has a wide range of opportunities for them.
“You can now further your studies in nursing, midwifery, lab technology and other health care
professions,” Minster Anthony said.

“We have plans to expand the regional health services to treat chronic illnesses and provide
mental health care services as well, so there are those areas as well,” the minister revealed.
He said “The Irfaan Ali government through the health ministry, has numerous ongoing training
programmes at the moment including “other opportunities with GOAL (Guyana Online
Academy of Learning) to further your studies, and we want everyone to have that opportunity to
advance themselves and develop their own communities.”
Barima/Waini parliamentary representative, minister Colin Croal was elated the 52 former
trainees successfully completed the CHW course and challenged them to broaden their learning.
“Health care professionals are critical in building healthy populations, especially as the world
grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister Croal said.
This was the largest batch of CHWs from Barima/Waini to graduate from the Health Ministry’s
programme. CHWs duties also include facilitating communication between community members
and healthcare providers.
Director General of the health ministry, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo; Hinterland Coordinator, Michael
Gouveia; Regional Health Officer (RHO) of Region One, Dr. Steven Cheefoon; Regional

Executive Officer (REO), Region One, Tikaram Bisesar; and Region One Chairman, Brentnol
Ashley attended the historic ceremony.
Dr Anthony took the opportunity to visit the Mabaruma Regional Hospital to assess the
equipment needs of the institution currently being retrofitted under the Smart Hospital
Project.
