REdO
Students with Region Nine that sat the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) Exams this year
performed exceptionally well. This was according to the Regional Education Officer, Miss
Keane Adams. Speaking exclusively to www.aroundtheregions.com, the REdO disclosed that the
region saw a significant improvement in this year’s results, with several students garnering at
several senior secondary schools out of the region.
She said that she was happy to be part of the team, noting that her staff, teachers, parents and
members of the community should share in the success that Region Nine has reaped this year.
“This was not the doing of me alone, as I helped to provide the environment, while my staff
ensured that the schools within the region were given the required support so that students and
teachers can get the job done and for that we are all happy,” an elated Adams shared with this
media house.
Topping the region with 509 marks is Tristan D’Aguiar who gained a spot at Bishops High,
while second, third and fourth places were occupied by Anita De Freitas with 507 gaining St.
Stanislaus College, Akayla Thoms scoring 506 and securing St Stanislaus College and Isabella
Moonsammy with a similar score and earning the same school as De Freitas and Thoms. The
four students all attended Arapaima primary.
The REdO disclosed that she foresee the results continuing to improve, stressing that with the
required systems being implemented and continued to be enhanced by the Ministry of Education,
Region Nine will continue demonstrating that students from their region can achieve several
senior top schools. She related that coming from Region Ten she was part of a team that had
implemented a system, which yield significant results and when she assumed the post of REdO,
she adopted the system, thus seeing immediate results.
“There was a system that I was part of when I was in Linden and I decided to utilize a similar
system when I came to Region Nine and we are seeing the successes of the system,” she said.
She revealed that while there are some areas that needs improvement overall, the students
performed very well. She noted that with the enormous support being given by Central Ministry
to the various Regions, Region Nine will continue to excel. “There is no doubt that the students,
teachers and support staff in Region Nine are determined to excel and we will continue on this
road that we have built as we are seeing successes,” she promised.
Disclosing the names of the regions top students, Adams disclosed that like the National results a
boy topped the region. She stated that this argues well for motivating other boys that they can
achieve the highest success once they apply themselves.
She however noted that like in previous years, the girls also dominated the top ten, adding that
despite the evident COVID related challenges, students were determined to do very well. “Our
teachers assisted by the students and their parents really worked and I would like to extend
congratulations to all of them, as while we are cognizant that every child will not get a top
school in Georgetown, we are pleased overall with the very good results that we got,” she noted.
She related that the department intends to implement a number of new and innovative systems as
they seek to combat the many challenges that they are confronted with, taking into account that
students are not physically meeting in classrooms across Guyana. “We are continuously working
on creating a system that will work for every student as we are in the hinterland and we are
cognizant of the many challenges and difficulties that we are hoping to face, but we are prepared
for the challenges and difficulties,” she declared.
The Regional Education Officer said that the staff at the education department are ensuring that
all students are reached to ensure that learning continues.
