Region Nine achieved 67% NGSA pass rate

…Top Ten students revealed – REdO

Region Nine secured sixty-seven percent pass rate at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) exams this year. This is according to the Regional Education Officer, Keane Adams.

Adams disclosed that the region’s performance is much better than in previous years, stating that the education sector within the region is extremely happy over the performances.

Adams revealed that despite the evident COVID related challenges, the students came out in their numbers to write the examination. She said that 810 students wrote the exams within the region with 540 passing. She further revealed that those that were unsuccessful at this exam will begin another opportunity as they would be placed in a transitional class for one year where remediation will be done. This, she said will help them in being better prepared to confront life at the secondary level. There were many challenges, but the students withstood them and of the 810, 540 pass and have been placed into secondary schools across Guyana,” REdO Adams said.

She revealed that the top ten were occupied by Tristan D’Aguiar with 509 marks who gained a spot at Bishops High, while second, third and fourth places were occupied by Anita De Freitas with 507 gaining St. Stanislaus College, Akayla Thoms scoring 506 and securing St Stanislaus College and Isabella Moonsammy with a similar score and earning the same school as De Freitas and Thoms. These four students all attended Arapaima primary. Securing the fifth spot was Shabena Sheik of the St. Ignatius Primary with 502 marks and gaining a spot at St. Rose’s High, while the sixth position  went to Seema Dewar of Toka Primary  with 500 marks and being awarded a place at St. Joseph’s High, the seventh position went to Isaac Atkinson of Aishalton Primary who got 491 marks and secured Aishalton Secondary, the eighth and ninth positions went to students of Arapaima Primary in Micheal Sue and Kira Alfred who secured 487 and 481 respectively and were both awarded the St Ignatius Secondary while closing off the top ten with 480 marks, was Dilshan Thomas of Karassabai Primary  who secured Annai Secondary.

Adams who has notched up some 29 years as an educator disclosed like the staff within her department, they are all elated and excited over this year’s performance. She said that several schools along with their respective teachers have begun already working with the students in preparation for 2021 exams. She admitted that they are looking forward for a higher pass rate along with more national senior secondary schools.

“We have already begin working on 2021 as we are confident that the region will do better next year, as Central Ministry continues to provide significant support and assistance to us,” the REdO said.
