MORE THAN 75 contracts will be awarded by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in
Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) to push development in the mineral-rich but largely
depressed area especially the bauxite-mining town of Linden.
The Regional authorities are in a race against time to complete the tendering process and hand
out the projects in a bid not to send back budgeted funding to the Central Government.
“We are not taking back any money this year (to Central government) assured,” Regional
Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Dwight John said during the final RDC meeting for this year.
“I must thank the staff for working (diligently and) we will continue to ensure that everything is
done to boost the Region. Thank you, staff, Councillors, Regional Chairman, Regional Vice
Chairman, I must say that you gave me a very warm welcome and I intend that we can continue
working hand in hand so that this can be the best Region in Guyana,” John said.
He and Regional Chairman, Mr. Deron Adams, are convinced that Region Ten can pull it off in
the short time span despite the challenges thrown up by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.
“As the REO I ask you to remain safe, as COVID is very much deadly and please continue to
observe the protocols whether with your family or friends, during the holiday season. I have been
here for six weeks now and we have worked a lot together to get the programmes and policies of
this region out. We will continue to work to ensure that all the money budgeted for this year is
spent,” John said.
When he addressed the final RDC meeting, Adams detailed the capital and current projects
ongoing in the Region especially infrastructure and agricultural schemes.
“These projects are five capital works projects involving two roads, one infrastructure
development and two agriculture development projects. Further, there were 30 water troughs that
were built for education and there have been some 33 buildings and external works under
recurrent works,” Adams said.
He continued, “I was informed that there are77 contracts that are sitting at the Regional Tender
Board desk and I have been assured by the REO that the contracts would be issue sometime this
week or very soon as they seek to ensure that all allocated monies are spent.”
“We can do it together and we will work together to develop this place that we call Guyana. We
together, can achieve great things and improve our lives,” Adams reiterated.
