PM says Guyana and Chile aiming to bolster relations

Georgetown, Guyana – (December 11, 2020) Prime Minister, Brigadier (ret’d)
Mark Phillips and Chilean Ambassador to Guyana Patricio Becker discussed ways of
strengthening relations between Guyana and Chile this morning.
Prime Minister Phillips said that he was happy to have received the courtesy visit. He
noted that it ended with both parties excited about future prospects.
He said that with Chile being one of the more developed countries in South America,
Guyana can learn and benefit from its expertise and experience.
“We looked at avenues in which both countries can benefit from this relationship; we
can benefit from capacity building, especially in the area of agriculture, mining,
renewable energy, defence, security and business development”.
Ambassador Becker, who supported the Prime Minister’s position, said that Chile is
opened to continued collaboration with Guyana, especially in the areas mentioned by
the PM.
“We would like to continue to collaborate and have these conversations, with the
intention that possibly in the future we can sign an agreement for multisectoral
cooperation; we are open to different fields like agriculture, mining, energy and possibly
offering some scholarships to policemen,” the Ambassador said.

The meeting between the Prime Minister and the Ambassador is the first since the new
Government assumed office on August 2.
Chile is the world’s leading copper producer, and its exports of minerals, wood, fruit,
seafood, and wine drive its GDP growth.
In the 2020 Index of Economic Freedom Score for the Americas Chile is ranked second
behind Canada.
