ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS OF OPEN DOOR CENTRE, the National Vocational Training
Centre for Persons with Disabilities, are COVID-free according to Manager (ag), Ms. Erica
Verwayne.
Verwayne said that this year is very special for the disability learning centre considering the
enormous havoc the disease has wreaked among Guyanese families killing 554 persons. She said
the National Vocational Training Centre for Persons with Disabilities has only been closed for
three weeks following the outbreak of the global pandemic in 2020 among Guyanese at home.
This she said was due to careful planning and ensuring strict COVID guidelines are always
maintained.
“The COVID-19 did not stop us as we were able to continue our classes (because) we have
restructured our (in)class times to ensure there was no congestion. Our Director, Dr Ariane
Mangar, would have ensured that we have all the necessary systems in place to have a safe
working space. To date none of our staff or trainees has contracted the virus on site,” Verwayne
declared.
Open Door Centre offers a two-year programme with a wide range of courses for potential
students. This year’s graduating class faced unprecedented challenges created by the highly
contagious and deadly corona virus infection which has so far killed 4.2 million persons
worldwide.
“Despite the pandemic they work, they work, they worked to be where they are today and I
would like to extend congratulations as we at the centre are really proud of you and we
look forward to seeing you at the next step,” the acting Manager told the 22 graduands.
