SOME 1,000 new Moraikobai residents began receiving potable water to their homes from the
regional Moraicobai Water Supply System in Region Five, (Mahaica/Berbice).
Minister within the Housing and Water Ministry, Susan Rodrigues was on hand last week to
commission the new multi-million-dollar facility executed by the Guyana Water Incorporated
(GWI) in conjunction with the Moraikobai Village Council.
Rodrigues assured residents the government will maintain the facility and ensure 24/7 supply of
drinkable water. GWI’s Hinterland Engineer, Khemraj Persaud said the system helps fulfil
Sustainable Development Goal # 6 of the UN’s 17 goals they hope are achieved globally by
2030.
Persaud said three Community Service Officers (CSOs) were trained to help monitor and
regulate the water system, and a operations official from Moraicobai will be identified for overall
supervision of the new service.
Meanwhile, Moraikobai Toshao Mr. Derrick John thanked GWI and the Government of Guyana
for their continued interest in the community.
Legislator representing Region 5, Faizal Jafarally, and Vice Chairman, Rion Peters,
witnessed the special ceremony.
