Moruca, Mabaruma farmers to benefit from $5 M greenhouses

region one reo- Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Tikaram Bisesar

Farmers in the Moruca and Mabaruma sub-regions of Region One will soon benefit from the establishment of two greenhouses valued $5 million to protect cultivated plants from extreme temperatures.

Speaking with DPI, Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Tikaram Bisesar said this is the first time that the regional administration has focused on this sector. The Region aims to realise the Government’s plans to decentralise agricultural support and services.

“We are currently on the verge of establishing agriculture programmes for the year.  We will be building greenhouses in sub-regions to allow farmers to get better access to a nursery, planting materials among others. The contract would have been awarded and will start shortly,” the REO explained.

This initiative will complement the Ministry of Agriculture’s effort to combat climate change and to practise climate-smart agriculture. This is particularly important as Guyana experiences prolonged dry and rainy seasons due to climate change.

“The programme of itself has not been gazetted as yet, but the administration has allocated $20 million to help push the region’s agriculture sector. Of course, these monies will be disbursed for the various aspects of our agriculture plan,” Mr. Bisesar said.

The administration intends to transform the region’s budding agricultural potential into a lucrative agricultural hub.
