SOME 600,000 DOSES OF LIFE-SAVING COVID INOCULANTS have been administered
throughout Guyana, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said.
Of this figure, Anthony said 361, 626 are adults who have received their first dose of the vaccine
while 209, 506 persons have gotten their second doses. Statistically, 70.5 percent of adult
Guyanese rolled up their sleeves for the first jab, while 57.9 percent have so far been fully
immunised.
Speaking on the ministry’s daily ‘Update’, Dr. Anthony said so far, a total of 24, 939 first doses
of the Pfizer vaccines have been administered to the adolescent population, accounting for
approximately 34.2 per cent of that group, while the second dose has been given to 12, 762 or
17.5 percent of that age group.
“So yesterday we had about 1,244 persons who got vaccinated, I think it’s the first time you’re
using the Cultural Centre site. And I think it was a tremendous success. A lot of people got
through. We had a steady flow of vehicles. And we were very pleased with the results. We are
planning, perhaps in the future to also reuse the site. We found that it was very convenient both
for vehicles to come there and also for people to stop off and walk in,” the minister explained.
Minister Anthony said on Monday’s ‘Update’ there were 106 new Covid cases in the last 24
hours, taking the number of active cases to 4,106.
“Again, Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) and Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West
Demerara) are the areas where we have the most active cases. We’ve seen a steady increase in
Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) as well and we have seen an increase in Region Seven
(Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice). So, these are areas that we are on
the lookout for. And with the increase in cases, we are also seeing correspondingly hospital
hospitalisation in these different regions,” he said.
He said there are 119 covid-19 patients hospitalised, with 83 persons at the Infectious Diseases
Hospital at Liliendaal, on the east coast.
In addition, 33 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Anthony said there have also been nine
maternal cases, with six at the Liliendaal facility and the others at the Georgetown Public
Hospital. The others are in various institutions around the country, Minister Anthony said.
