The Ministry of Health will soon meet with residents of Golden Groveto addressmounting concerns about the relocation of tombs at the community’s burial ground.
General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said that he has taken note of a news report recording the residents’ concerns.
“I told the NDC chairman and the Minister of Health to arrange to meet with the people there,” he said at a recent press conference.
Earlier last month, the Ministry of Health disclosed that 15 tombs are set to be removed from the burial ground to accommodate the construction of pumps, which will improve drainage in the Diamond/Grove area.
These tombs are located in the southwestern section of the burial ground.
On January 30, the Ministry also issued a notice of the relocation of these tombs, announcing a site visit for interesting persons on January 31. However, according to news reports, the residents argued that this was late notice.
Dr Jagdeo explained that while the project is crucial to enhance the area’s drainage capacity, it is equally important that the residents are appropriately consulted and notified.
“We have to discuss this with them, we can’t go in a heavy-handed manner and just dig up things,” the general secretary said.
