“No longer will we accept shabby works,” – Minister Anand Persaud
Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon Anand
Persaud do not mince his words when he issued a warning to officials within Region Ten and
Contractors during a visit to Linden on Friday. He declared that contractors will be backlisted
for not sticking to specifications of projects and for the many shabby and poor jobs that he
has seen with several projects across Guyana.
Minister Persaud told Regional Councillors and staff of the RDC Region Ten that he is
disappointed over the any poor works that he has seen on roads, schools, health centres and
other government related projects across Guyana. The Minister’s anger and disappointment
was aroused by what he said is the many projects that he saw across Guyana that were
executed at a very poor standard.
“As I traverse Guyana, I see a lot of roads in a terrible state, schools, health centres also in
bad shape. It means that work which was done was not done in a proper state. So you at the
RDC level and more over the people within the communities where work is being done
should ensure that contractors deliver in a timely manner on what works they were supposed
to have done ,” the Minister said.
He warned the Regional Councillors and officials that coupled with residents they can be the
watch dogs, thus ensuring that contractors deliver the best quality to Region Ten. This, he
cautioned is very important, noting that with poor works it’s the people of the Region that
will continue to suffer.
“You and the community should be the watch dogs for the contractors, no longer will we
tolerate shabby work and contractors must know that they would be blacklisted if they do not
adhere to the specifications of projects,” the Minister declared.
Contractors aroused Minister’s anger by what he said was significantly for works by
contractors, noting that this is not only to Region Ten but across Guyana. He noted that it
meant that those that were responsible for ensuring that the residents benefit enormously
from the projects. This, he reiterated saw residents not benefiting to the capacity that it was
intended.
“I expect you as officials and Councillors to do know better. Whatever we do from a
government level is through you and we want to ensure that together we deliver on a timely
manner to the people of Region 10,” Minister Persaud emphasised.
Minister Persaud declared that the Government is “fed up” with the quality of work being
done by several contractors’. He reiterated that defaulting contractors would be blacklisted.
“The contractors must deliver not only in a timely manner but what supposed to be done,”
the Minister warned.
The Minister expressed his views during a meeting with senior officials and Regional
Councillors at the Watooka Guest House. He was part of a ministerial visit by himself and
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall. Accompanying
the ministers were Permanent Secretary, Emile Mc Garrell.
