Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon Anil Nandlall has reaffirmed his
commitment to serving the public irrespective of their political affiliation.
The Minister reaffirmed his commitment earlier today when he held another edition of his
outreach to members of the public at Annandale, East Coast Demerara. The weekly edition,
which is held every Saturday from 10 am to 12noon saw a wide number of persons turning up
from various regions and communities.
It was revealed that several persons coming from several communities would journey to
Annandale every Saturday in their pursuit to meet with the Minister. He said that many persons
have issues and concerns that they would like to address. As such, he is prepared to assist
wherever he can, directing them to those that he feels may better address their concerns.
This, many noted, is very commendable as they are able to wholeheartedly discuss whatever is
bothering and or affecting them, as they seek resolution. He revealed that there are several
ministers scattered across Guyana meeting and interacting with residents with a view of
addressing issues and concerns.
“As I speak there are several ministers right across Guyana meeting with residents. As part of
that general programme of seeking to address residents’ concerns and issues, the Ministry of
Legal Affairs holds an interactive session every Saturday at Annandale on the East Coast of
Demerara. This will allow residents to raise whatever issues and concerns that they have, so as to
address them,” he Attorney General said.
Minister Nandlall pointed out that while there have been several questions as to his decision for
using the village of Annandale, he said that this forms part of his effort to significantly make
strides in reaching out to residents. He stressed that because of several issues, his office doesn’t
have the space to accommodate the number of residents that he has been meeting with every
Saturday.
“There are many questions as to why I have chosen Annandale on the East Coast but there is not
enough space to meet with the number of persons who come out every Saturday to meet with me.
Further, it is important to note that I have Parliamentary responsibility for the East Coast and
because of that, I firmly believe that I should have permanent residence here, hence my presence
here every Saturday,” he declared.
He dismissed fears and the perception that he has no intention of going to other communities,
declaring that he intends to visit several other communities but wanted to ensure that a
permanent office is established at Annandale.
“I do intend to visit other communities so it’s not like I don’t plan visiting other
communities," he assured.
The AG and Minister of Legal Affaitrs disclosed that because of the size of his office and the
number of persons that come every week to meet with him, he felt that engaging these persons at
the Annandale office was a wiser decision. He reiterated his commitment to visit several other
communities, declaring that this will be done in the very near future.
“My ministry in Georgetown doesn't have the physical space, so we decided to have these
sessions here and I must say that people from Berbice, Essequibo, Parika, and other communities
come out here on Saturdays to meet with me. I may not be able to help all of them but for those
that I can, I will and for those that I can’t, I will ensure that they are directed to the right person
and or agency,” he promised.
Minister Nandall added that while his area centers on legal related matters, he will continue to
ensure that the relevant subject ministers are informed of whatever situation that needs to be
addressed. He said that after every session a comprehensive report is prepared which is shared
among his cabinet colleagues with the view of addressing same.
“So at the end of the day it is drawn at least to the attention of somebody who can assist, that is
why I have an assistant who does a report and that report is submitted to cabinet and
disseminated to the various ministers and addressed by the relevant state agencies so that there
can be some positive impact,” Minister Nandlall concluded.
