LABOUR MINISTER Joe Hamilton and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Board of
Industrial Training (BIT) Richard Maughn met recently with close to a score Kwakwani
undergoing training in electrical installation state agency.
Minister Hamilton reminded the 19 trainees about the necessity of being under the official
Labour Ministry umbrella in case of labour disputes. He also spoke of the need for
occupational safety and health (OSH) protocols to be always observed within the work place.
"No boss should allow you to work in an unsafe environment," Hamilton said.
He also announced plans to establish a Labour Office in the Upper Demerara/Berbice
(Region Ten) community. With it the labour ministry will be in a position to ensure OSH,
Labour, and other technical specialists are available to them through BIT.
Hamilton encouraged the trainees to pursue training in other disciplines to make themselves
more marketable in the mineral-rich region.
After meeting with the trainees, Hamilton and his delegation visited the recently-refurbished
Kwakwani Utilities Incorporated (KUI) where students are exposed to the practical elements
of the programme.
BIT's Technical Officer with responsibility for the Kwakwani programme, Ms. Pam
Rambarran, accompanied the minister on the visit.
