The Ministry of Health is monitoring New Amsterdam, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) following a spike in the number of Covid positive cases, even as it continues to keep a close watch on Moraikobai.
Minister Hon. Dr Frank Anthony made this disclosure during Monday’s COVID-19 update.
In New Amsterdam, the team is working to reduce the numbers and are conducting contact tracing of the persons who may have been exposed.
“New Amsterdam is an area of concern as currently, we have 36 cases there. The health team in Region Six has been monitoring this and hopefully we’ll soon see the cases start declining,” Dr. Anthony said.
Meanwhile, in Moraikobai, Mahaica-Berbice (Region Five) the number of recorded cases has increased from 33 to 44. A health team was dispatched to the area last week, which continued testing over the weekend.
Dr. Anthony said there will be increased testing for a comprehensive assessment to be done. An increase in positive cases can be expected as more tests are done, he added.
“We would be sending in health personnel who’ll stay in for a couple of weeks until we have this situation under more control to ensure that we are able to get people to do all the right things.”
The Minister also urged residents to support all efforts to safeguard their health as their cooperation is crucial to curbing transmission of the disease.
