Guyana, Canada sign MOU for fellowship training in medicine

HEALTH MINISTER DR FRANK ANTHONY RECENTLY VISITED MCMASTER
UNIVERSITY in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, to finalise a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) paving the way for local physicians to receive skills training in a variety of sub-
specialties.
Guyana will reciprocate by permitting McMaster University to continue expanding its global
health and research initiatives with a major focus on this country, Anthony explained.
Dr Narendra Singh, Associate Professor of Paediatrics at McMaster University and President of
Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK) organisation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO)
partnering with Guyana to address infant mortality, accompanied the minister on the Canadian
MOU visit.
Dr Anthony, Dr Paul O’Byrne, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Karen Belaire, the Chair,
Board of Directors, St. Joseph Health Systems, International Outreach Program, inked the
agreement.
Also attending the signing ceremony were Dr Angelo Mikrogianakis, Chair of Pediatrics at
McMaster Children Hospital, and Mr Bruce Squires, President, McMaster Children’s Hospital
and VP Woman and Children’s Health.
Dr Anthony thanked several physicians, including Dr Ronald Barr, Dr Brian Cameron, Dr
Andrea Hunter, Dr April Tam, Dr Karen Baley, and Dr Narendra Singh who have been
instrumental in partnering with IHSC to help develop many of the postgraduate programmes
offered at the University of Guyana (UG).
