Grenadians condemn attack on star athlete

WORLD JAVELIN CHAMPION, GRENADIAN ANDERSON PETERS, sustained bodily injuries following a recent assault by five males aboard the vessel ‘Harbour Master’.

Reports out of St Georges said the injuries to the country’s star athlete are non-life-threatening.

Sporting bodies, the security sector and a political organisation are among the chorus of condemnation on the “inhumane” attack on the global javelin star.

The Grenada Olympic Association condemned the “cowardly” act towards one of the nation’s sporting icons who last month stood at the top of the podium in the field event at the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championship in Eugene, in the United States.

”The Grenada Olympic Committee joins with all of Grenada in condemning these barbaric actions and looks forward to the relevant authorities taking decisive action against all the perpetrators,”  statement from the athletics body said.

The Royal Grenada Police Force in a statement confirming the quintet’s attack on Peters said the star “is presently receiving medical attention for minor injuries. Several crew members of the said vessel (Harbour Master) are in Police custody assisting with investigations.”

Meanwhile, the New National Party (NNP) has also denounced the physical assault on Peters.

In a release the NNP spoke of its “dismay regarding an incident involving acts of violence meted out to our beloved double World Javelin Champion, Anderson Peters which occurred Wednesday 10th August, 2022”.
“Grenada is marked by its peaceful nature and without a doubt, we subscribe to the rule of law. We anticipate a swift judicial process and justice in accordance with the laws of Grenada,” the NNP reminded

The Grenadian police are still probing the incident.
