Granger wants to remain PNC Leader

Former President of Guyana, David Granger

PEOPLES National Congress (PNC) Leader Mr. David Granger plans to contest the position at
next year’s Congress, its party Chairman, Mrs. Volda Lawrence told Region Ten supporters
recently.
The decision by the former Guyana President and retired army Brigadier has stunned present and
passed members and supporters of one of the two leading political outfits of the multi-racial
Republic and sole English-speaking country in South America.
As President, his leadership was tepid, at best: his public appearances were infrequent; he rarely
addressed pressing national issues personally and his public policy positions were mysterious to
the nation he led.
As party leader, he engineered Joseph Harmon’s ascent as Opposition Leader in the National
Assembly following his defeat at the 2020 election.
Party supporters were incensed by the lack of will power by the former soldier and when he s
scratched Lawrence and a host of experienced members from the Opposition parliamentary list
many had had enough of the septuagenarian Granger’s enigmatic leadership.
An ongoing internal rift between Lawrence and Harmon widened, then boiled over publicly and
Granger’s decision to try hold on to the party reins of power is seen as a strategic move to help
prevent the total collapse of the 63-year-old PNC.
“Once Harmon remains as Opposition Leader Lawrence’s chances of being a major decision-
maker will continue to widen within the party we know that. She has the potential of taking the
party forward,” a source surmised.

On a recent visit to the party’s Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) stronghold, Lawrence
dropped the bombshell announcement about the former President’s decision, and a softer
information about Local Government polls also scheduled for 2021.
“I want to inform you that at next year’s Congress Mr. David Graner will be contesting for the
leadership position again as he has an interest in being party leader still, So be notified that
David Granger will be running again,” someone present during the announcements related to
www.aroundtheregions.com.
Furthermore, “comrades as you know that it was Larry London who served as this Region’s
Campaign Manager at this year’s elections. He did a remarkable job and we won in a huge way.
Well, let me tell you that Mr. London will be once again entrusted with the Local Government
election campaign for Region Ten next year. You are all expected to give your best and do what
has to be done to ensure that the party wins Region Ten next year,” the person also reported her
as saying.
Politics in Region Ten is currently filled with intrigue with former MP Mr. Jermaine Figueira,
once a Harmon loyalist, now publicly embrace Lawrence. The intrigue through, reached high up
in the PNC party too. a source reported.
“Figueira was disrespected by Granger when at the last minute, based on the advice and
information provided by the Regional Chairman, Renis Morian, Figueira was bypassed for a
Junior Ministerial portfolio. This hurt him very much. Well, it’s clear that he hasn’t forgiven
Granger and Harmon for this and I am sure that is why he has sought to support Lawrence
instead,” the source said.
For a religious leader, Morian has been inundated in controversy. He was accused of demanding
lands from the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL) gratis, and
when that didn’t happen, tried to mastermind the dismissal of Mr. Colvin Heath-London the then
CEO, at the instigation of Granger and then Agriculture Minister Mr. Noel Holder.

“Many people here know of the depths of Morian’s wickedness and desperation and he feels that
when Volda Lawrence served as Minister of Health she had failed to allow him to do as he liked
and this had helped in pushing his support behind Harmon instead,” a source noted.
The source said the mischievous and divisive Morian ignored the Region Ten Committee and
nominated Ms. Denise Belgrave to Granger for a National Award.
“He was the one who secretly nominated her by convincing Mr. Granger that Belgrave deserved
a national award. While many in the party felt that while she was making contributions, it was
not enough to warrant her a National Award over several other well-deserving persons, but
Morian knew how to convince and he created his mischief and division very well,” the source
said.
When Denise Belgrave fell out of Morian’s favour, he ensured her name was expunged from the
List of Candidates for Region Ten at the March 2020 National and Regional polls.
Belgrave wept inconsolably the source told www.aroundtheregions.com.
