THE GUYANA ELECTIONS COMMISSIOM (GECOM) FINALLY FIRED three of its top
officials accused of rigging the bitterly contested an controversial March 2020 National and
Regional polls.
Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Mr. Keith Lowenfield, his Deputy, Ms. Roxanne Myers and
Region Four Chief Returning Officer, Mr. Claimont Mingo were all fingered in the alleged
electoral skullduggery sent packing after GECOM voted to decide their fate.
Lowenfield, Myers and Mingo were accused of masterminding the tallying votes in favour of the
then ruling coalition A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance For Change
(APNU+AFC) from fake statements of poll (SOPs).
It took GECOM a mere 30 minutes to formalize the trio’s dismissal, after the three opposition
nominated Commissioners, Mr. Vincent Alexander, Mr. Charles Corbin and Mr. Desmond
Trotman abstained from Thursday’s voting paving the way for GECOM Chairman, Justice
Claudette Singh (ret) to terminate their services following support from the government-
nominated Commissioners, Mr Sase Gunraj, Ms Bibi Shadick and Manoj Narayan.
“At the meeting held today at GECOM as a result of the adornment of the meeting held Tuesday
last a vote was taken in relation to the employment of Mr. Lowenfield as CEO, Roxanne Myers
as DCEO and Clairmont Mingo as Returning Officer District Number Four. A vote was taken at
the Guyana Elections Commission in relation to the employment of those three persons and their
employment are terminated. That is the simple report,” Gunraj explained.
“As you are aware this nation has waited for a long time for this to happen, and it has finally
happened. Those positions will have to be filed and it will be filled using the normal procedures.
The posts will be advertised so people will be encouraged to apply and they will be interviewed
and hopefully we will recruit and have those vacancies filled,” Gunraj said about short term
decisions for GECOM.
