Former AG of Grenada wants world javelin champ charged

A FORMER GRENADAN ATTORNEY-GENERAL IS WARNING about the possibility of private criminal charges being brought against double world javelin champion, Anderson Peters.

The one-time top lawyer for the Grenadian government, Cajeton Hood, threatened litigation against the star Grenadian athlete if police do not charge Peters for his role in a fight aboard the vessel ‘Harbour Master’ out of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Six men and a lone female were arrested for assaulting Peters, causing him injuries, described in initial reports as “non-life-threatening”.

Five of the men: John Alexander, 55; Deckhand of Arima; Mikhail John, 35, Sailor of San Juan; Noel Cooper, 42, Captain of Gurpe; and Sheon Jack, 28, Sailor of Cocorite were all charged and pleaded guilty Monday.

The prosecution brought no charges against Lance Wiggins, 45, Sailor of Cocorite.

Abiola Benjamin, 40, Operations Manager/Police Officer of Maraval, was also charged for assault allegedly launched against Peters.

Police bulletin also said Alexander, John, Cooper, Wiggins and Jack were further charged with causing harm to Kiddon Peters, brother of javelin champion.

Hood is convinced the police are biased by not charging the global athletic star.

Hood told media operatives, “There was a fight (on the boat) with at least three Grenadian people involved – we have the identity of the third person.”

The third person, he said, “punched people” and the police have not picked (him) up for questioning in the incident.

“If that does not happen, I will file private criminal proceedings tomorrow (today Tuesday) – you can quote me on that,” he said.

“If indeed they want war and Anderson wants his name to be out there, let them go ahead,” he challenged.

Hood, and two other Grenadian lawyers are representing the ‘Harbour Master’ crew involved in the recent fracas.

The incident has attracted much regional attention and video footage has surfaced showing Peters being beaten by ‘Harbour Master’ crew members before ending up in the sea.

Attorney Hood who was AG under the 2013-19 New National Party (NNP) administration prefers a diplomatic solution to the physical altercation trending in the news and reportedly intends to approach the prosecution to join him in a close-door meeting with Chief Magistrate, Teddy St Louis, during the hearing to help resolve the matter and to avoid a drawn-out court battle which might prove detrimental to the career of the country’s World Javelin Champion, according to information coming out of media operatives in Grenada.
