Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Mohabir Anil Nandlall recently donated 360
food and sanitation hampers to flood-ravaged St Cuthbert’s Mission.
Toshao Mr. Timothy Andrews received the hampers from Nandlall on behalf of the community
during the minister’s recent visit to the Demerara/Mahaica (Region Four) community.
“The visit was certainly a fruitful one. Not only did the Minister distribute hampers, but he also
addressed a number of issues raised by residents,” Andrews revealed.
Andrews said Nandlall also made “some promises to the residents as well,” without providing
details.
“The residents were all satisfied with the interaction and willingness of the minister to listen to
their concerns and to address them. The people fell in love with him and he fell in love with them
too, so it was really a very successful venture not only because of the hampers but also
considering the numerous issues and concerns that he addressed,” Andrews said.
The government’s Department of Public Information (DPI) in a statement quoted Nandlall telling
St Cuthbert’s residents: “We know that you have suffered untold and irreparable damage, that all
your crops have been lost, some of your homes have been destroyed; (other) buildings have been
destroyed (and) millions of dollars have been lost because of this flood not only in your
community, but right across the country.”
Nandlall, DPI said, attributed this year’s heavy, unexpected flooding in Guyana and
neighbouring Suriname, to catastrophic global climate change.
“As a government, all we can do in these moments is to empathise with you, to assure you that
we are here and that we will continue to be here whenever there are disasters of whatever kind,”
DPI said still quoting the Legal Affairs Minister.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently declared the flooding a national disaster, paving the
way for Guyana to access regional and international assistance from which St Cuthbert’s Mission
will benefit.
Locally, the National Assembly recently approved a $23B supplementary budget from which
$10B will be used for impending flood relief.
“We are very happy that the AG visited us here in St Cuthbert’s Mission as the entire
community was severely affected by the floods and we welcome whatever assistance
persons are willing to give to us as we are rebuilding one day at a time,” Toshao Andrews
