THE FEMALE PRISON IN NEW AMSTERDAM WILL BE RELOCATED CLOSER TO
THE COUNTRY’S CAPITAL CITY, Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn, announced.
Benn didn’t disclose the rationale behind the government’s decision when he spoke to
Pomeroon/Supenaam (Region Two) residents during the recent Cabinet outreach in Anna
Regina. However, the disclosure was part of a raft of measures the minister unveiled which he
said is geared to help improve the sector nationwide.
The female prison located in the country’s first town, in the ‘Ancient County’, Berbice, will be
shifted to an East Coast Demerara community which is closer to Georgetown, the capital city.
Among the government’s ameliorating measures will be construction of a training facility to
school the 1,200 inmates at the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, prison.

“We want to rehabilitate those persons; we want to intercept and mitigate issues. We have to
make provisions in case things go bad that we got to deal with some people who need
rehabilitation of that form being incarcerated,” Benn said.
In the improvement plan, the home affairs ministry has already commissioned three police
stations to help in the countrywide crime-fighting plan.
Two of the police stations were completed in Aurora and Suddie, while the other completed
in Charity, all in Region Two by the Engineering Unit of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
