HOW RETIRED REGISTERED NURSE (RN) PATRICIA DANIELS-STEPHENS OF
LINDEN CONTRACTED THE DEADLY COVID-19 VIRUS IS A MYSTERY TO HER
DEVASTATED FAMILY.
The virus eventually killed Daniels, 65, a week ago while she was still a patient in the country’s
Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal, on the East Coast corridor.
Daniels-Stephens, who goes by the monikers ‘Aunty Pat’ and ‘Sis Pat’ was a RN and Dental
Nurse was well-known in the bauxite-mining Municipality in Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region
Ten) who had worked at the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC).
She was employed in the country’s healthcare sector for almost 40 years. She had retired five
years ago after completing decades of service at the LHC.
Speaking exclusively to www.aroundtheregions.com her eldest daughter Kendra Fiedtkou
admitted neither she and her late mother were mystified how she contracted the deadly disease
although she followed the protocols scrupulously.
“My mother died as a result of COVID. It's sad but she did! Of course, she had some underlying
conditions which contributed to her situation as well. It is really difficult for us to trace because,
she was a very active person and she visited many persons (and) many places. So for me to say
or have an idea I might be so wrong,’ Kendra said.
The trained teacher admitted that her mother’s death has reinforced the severe danger of COVID.
Consequently, she and other family members have increased their vigilance and aggressive
approach in protecting themselves against the pandemic.
“We are shocked as we never expected this but what was evident is that she interacted a lot with
many persons. I am being extra careful as this has caused us to increase our vigilance and
aggressive approach,” Kendra said.
She said her mother was resigned to her fate since she had been battling a number of medical
challenges for several years. However, they are comforted by the fact that God knows best and
her mother was His faithful disciple.
As expected, there was tremendous outpouring of grief and support to the grieving family from
Region Ten residents.
“We are not surprised! Of course, at the beginning of everything I really did not have people in
mind actually, but as time went by, people kept calling and/or coming up. It reminds us that
indeed she was popular. No strangers have called us, people called because if she met someone,
she would tell us so. All those who have called or visited we know them. Because of this, we
don’t see anybody as strangers, but rather persons whom she had touched their lives in some
way,” her elder daughter stressed.
The late RN and Dental Nurse Patricia Daniels-Stephens was the mother of two daughters and
six grandchildren. She has also left to mourn countless relatives and friends.
She will be buried Thursday, May 6 th .
www.aroundtheregions.com extends deepest condolences to her family and friends on her
sudden death.
