BRICKDAN SECONDARY SCHOOL IS CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS after a student
tested positive with COVID -19.
“We were informed early this week that a student was tested positive and out of the abundance
of precaution, the school was shut for two weeks to facilitate sanitising,” a teacher said.
Some teachers applaud the decision to close the school for two weeks noting this will serve as an
eye opener not just for the sector, but the rest of the country, especially the sceptics.
“Everyone must increase action and protection against the disease,” the teachers said.
“You have to be very careful as this disease continues to create problems in this country. As
such, we are urging all to take all required precautions. As for those who think that COVID is a
joke, please think again,” some teachers pleaded.
The school which is now located in East La Penitence, in the capital city, is expected to be
thoroughly fumigated this week before staff and students return just in time for next week’s
closure for the annual summer holidays.
Meanwhile, some teachers at the school are outraged that the students’ health status was treated
as a matter of secrecy and hidden from them. They were disappointed to get the information via
the ‘grapevine’
“Why the secrecy”? they queried. They maintained that an event of such magnitude should not
be concealed from staff members and parents, urging the government to put forward a policy
position on the issue.
“This will help when someone would have contracted or would have been exposed to the
disease,” they said defending their call for a national disclosure policy.
Education Minister, Priya Manickchand and Chief Education Officer (CEO), Dr. Marcel
Hutson, were unavailable for comment.
