THE 13-YEAR-OLD, JOSHUA HENRY BARIMA/WAINI (REGION ONE) CHILD
DIED FROM CEREBRAL HAEMMORHAGE AS A RESULT OF ANEURYSM according
to post mortem findings Wednesday by a medical team led by Guyana’s foremost pathologist, Dr
Nehaul Singh.
A brain aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. It often looks like a
berry hanging on a stem. A brain aneurysm can leak or rupture, causing bleeding into the brain
(hemorrhagic stroke).
Other team members included Dr Nancy Sitchao, a Pathologist and Dr Swarasite Persuad-Etwaria, a
Government Medical Officer (GMO).
The Kamwatta, Moruca school-child took ill and died a mere two hours after receiving the
second jab of the Pfizer vaccine to help protect against COVID-19 which has killed millions
globally and over 700 in Guyana.
A Ministry of Health statement said the child’s family members witnessed the post-mortem and
the cause of death was identified in their presence. The findings identified the pre-existing
condition of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm leading to haemorrhage (bleeding).
The ministry’s statement said that on examination, the vaccination site was not identifiable and
there was no scarring or hematoma. There were no other post mortem findings of relevance, the
statement said.
The health ministry has extended profound condolences to the family of Henry, and Health
Minister, Dr Frank Anthony has assured that they will provide all necessary support to the family
and Kamwatta community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and we pray they have the strength to cope
with the loss of a loved one,” the ministry statement said.
