Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Central
Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) Mr. Sherwyn Greaves recently met Block ‘X’
Plantation Herstelling (Cane View), East Bank Demerara residents occupying state lands
reserved for a Eccles to Great Diamond four-lane highway.
During the meeting, Croal and Greaves outlined government’s resettlement plans for the 30
households living illegally on the property. The details include provision of a house lot in two
areas not far from the current location, and rebuilding their structures based on current
valuations.
CH&PA will fund relocation costs, ensure the resuscitation of their livelihoods, and respect the
dignity of the residents, a statement from the ministry assures.
It said at the new locations, residents will enjoy access to healthcare, educational and recreational
facilities, as well as basic utilities such as electricity and water. They will also receive
Certificates of Title and Transports, vital ownership-documents now available to them because
of their illegal occupancy of the lots.
The relocation is part of a wider national plan to reduce traffic congestion along the East
Bank Demerara corridor, linking communities, and help transforming the country’s travel
landscape in keeping with President Irfaan Ali’s five-year vision.
