Acting President in discussion with Georgetown Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Acting President, Mark Phillips held a fruitful meeting with Georgetown Mayor, His Worship
Ubraj Narine and his Deputy, Alfred Mentore Tuesday at the PM’s Camp Street, Georgetown
office.
Mayor Narine request that a Mayor and City Council (M&CC) representative sit on the National
Covid-19 Task Force was granted by the Acting President, head of the Task Force.
Other issues raised between the two sides included the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., and
the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) playing a greater role within the chief municipality.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Mentore said that the CDC would help in the fight against Covid-19
noting that it can also support the city council in several other areas.

Phillips described the discussions as being productive. He noted that it would help to amplify
the cooperation between the Central Government and Local Government because of the high
level of activities taking place in the capital city and the large number of Government buildings
located in the capital city.
“This was a welcomed courtesy call…we are co-located in the city,” Phillips said.
Phillips pointed out that the City’s mayor and his team now have a second avenue to reach
Central Government along with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
The two sides agreed there will be follow-up meetings.
