Jagdeo to head Guyana’s climate change delegation to Suriname

VICE PRESIDENT DR. BHARRAT JAGDEO WILL LEAD A GUYANESE
DELEGATION to neighbouring Suriname to help craft a common climate change position for
the two CARICOM countries ahead of the November UN 26 th Conference of the Parties
(COP26).
“[Guyana and Suriname] have agreed that the VP would lead a delegation to Suriname before
COP26 to look at the coordination of our strategies, and also to work with our counterparts in
Suriname in coming up with a common strategy in dealing with climate change and the
environment,” Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali said during the recent visit of Surinamese
President, Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
Ali reiterated preservation of the environment in the two countries remain a critical issue in their
economic development strategies. According to Ali, the CARICOM neighbouring states jointly
market their forests, as carbon credit which is a tradable permit or certificate allowing holders to
emit a ton of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of another greenhouse gas (GHG).
“We have agreed that we’re going to jointly approach the area of environment and climate
change, to come up with a common strategy for both Guyana and Suriname especially in
preparation for COP26 and also in exploring the possibility of merging our forest asset in the
carbon credit market,” Ali noted.
COP26 will be hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy from October 31 to November 12 in
the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced a postponement of the event from last year.
