CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN ON THE FIRST 20 OF PRESIDENT IRFAAN ALI’S
promised 1,000 new houses to Lindeners.
During his first outreach to the impoverished bauxite-mining municipality following his election
as the eighth Executive President of the English-speaking South American Republic, President
Ali committed his new administration last January, to building 1,000 new homes to help renew
the ailing Upper Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) township.
The bauxite-mining town is a traditional bastion of the parliamentary opposition Peoples
National Congress (PNC) the major party in the six-member coalition A Partnership for National
Unity, Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC). Linden and Region Ten, voted overwhelmingly for
the APNU+AFC in the 2020 polls which it lost as the then ruling party.
It is no secret that the ruling Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) coalition wants to breach
the defence of the PNC and capture especially the Linden votes in the 2025 polls. Vice President,
Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, is working diligently to fulfil this political dream.
Building of the initial batch of homes for young professionals commenced in Amelia’s Ward
under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing and Water and its agency, the Central Housing
& Planning Authority (CH&PA). Housing Minister, Collin Croal was on site top witness the
commencement of the construction by contractor CB Housing Development Inc. which has
employed some 150 skilled Lindeners.
“This project is testament of the President’s promise to this region, it will translate into jobs for
skilled and unskilled workers, all the building and construction material will be sourced from
hardware stores around Linden,” Minister Croal said.
He said “the spin-off benefits will be remarkable and reflects Government’s commitment to
revive economic activities in Region Ten. The Government’s aggressive housing drive is aimed
at creating jobs and this is testament of this commitment.”
Meanwhile, under the Ministry’s work programme for the second half of the year some $40M is
slated to be spend in the mining town to rehabilitation and upgrade roads in Amelia’s Ward and
Wisroc, in Linden.
Croal said for next year, another $100M will be used to put housing infrastructure in
previously untouched areas 8000 acres where roads, access bridges, water and electrical
network will be provided for allottees.
