PAHO/WHO, the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation is strongly
supporting the three-day agro-webinar novelty the Adolescent Health unit is pushing at this
year’s International Youth Day observances.
PAHO/WHO official, Dr Janice Woolford, explained the hemispheric and global body is
supporting ministry of health initiatives to help the country achieve targets set by the United
Nations (UN) agencies.
“PAHOWHO family and community health unit is very pleased to participate in international
youth day activities and adolescent health activities with the ministry of health. We have been
supporting the Ministry of Health goals for adolescent health in order to meet the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) targets,” said Dr Woolford.
As the core of any society, national development programmes must target adolescents/youths
ensuring they remain healthy for bright prospects for the future.
“This is important in the well-being of adolescent/youths and the prevention of morbidity and
mortality is the key to improvement of health,” the PAHO/WHO officials declared.
The PAHO/WHO Guyana office will continue supporting such novelties pursued by the ministry
of health, Dr Woolford assured.
“We also have noticed that the team this year is transforming food systems: youth innovation for
human and planetary health. So our adolescent /youth need to be involved in all areas to have
good health and mental wellbeing. We would continue to support activities to improve the health
of adolescent/youths of society.”
Meanwhile, Adolescent Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health Coordinator, Ms. Cilandell
Glen assured participants in this year’s agro-initiative will relive the experience for the rest of
their lives.
“We are confident that the public will fully participate however because there is a cap on the
number of participants, we cannot accept everyone expressing an interest but what we are hoping
for is that based on the level of interest in the activity the department will seek to make the
activity as one of the main programmes of the Adolescent department. While we are looking for
50 persons for this International Youth Day Project we have intentions of extending this,” Glen
said.
