PRIME MINISTER MARK PHILLIPS MONDAY BRAGGED about his government’s
multi-billion ‘Because We Care’ cash grant programme, boasting that is strong evidence of its
commitment to education development.
Phillips, a retired Brigadier of the local army, said the financial plan, which gifts each public
sector student nationally $19,000 confirms the Irfaan Ally’s administration’s ability to deliver on
its promises to Guyanese.

The Prime Minister’s made the gloating remarks ahead of the financial distribution in
Kwakwani, Upper Demerara – Berbice (Region Ten).
Phillips expressed pleasure that some 11000 Region Ten students will benefit from the $209M
that will be handed out in the mineral-rich community. Under the ‘Because We Care’ initiative,
each student will receive $15,000, and a uniform grant of $4,000.
“In our manifesto when we went to the people seeking to be elected. We made it clear that we
will return the “Because We Care” grant, because we’re convinced that notwithstanding that
education is free in Guyana, whatever additional assistance the Government can give to the
people of Guyana who have children in school will be most welcomed by the people,” Phillips
gloated.
Ms. Jacqueline Williams, a mother of three, was moved when she received $57,000 directly from
the Prime Minister.
“It will really help me to buy their school things, especially since Covid has affected everyone
financially… the Prime Minister also mentioned that by 2025 the money will go up to $50,000
and I think that will be really nice,” an elated Williams declared.
Meanwhile, while in Kwakwani the Prime Minister used the time to tour the head office of the
Kwakwani Utilities Incorporated (KUI) where he also met with staff members. He inspected
several facilities under the control of the utility regulator in the predominantly mining and
logging community. The PM visited the Kwakwani power generation plant; the Kwakwani water
treatment plant; and a newly-installed water distribution system, which will supply potable water
to approximately 400 residents of Jonestown.

Prime Minister Phillips was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Mignon Bowen-Phillips;
Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Dwight John and Kwakwani Utilities Incorporated
(KUI) General Manager, Mr. David Adams.
