Agreement signed for increased wages and salaries for GTT workers

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) Company and Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union (GPTWU) on Friday met an agreement for the increase in wages and salaries of GTT workers.

The agreement for a six per cent increase was signed by GTT’s Human Resources Director, Tiana Gurcharran and President of the GPTWU, Harold Shepherd.

Acting Chief Labour Officer, Michelle Baburam said the increase was for the period October 1, 2020 t0 September 30, 2021. She also noted that the agreement will be reviewed in the next six months.

“I want to say that this is a very good move to have GTT and GPTWU to have some good resolution in percentage that they are now offering,” Baburam said.

Gurcharran said GTT is satisfied with the agreement.

“We are happy that we’ve concluded this and we will continue working with the Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union… We look forward to working together with the union for the betterment of our employees and company,” she said.

Meanwhile, the GPTWU President said the union understands the challenges faced by GTT and is prepared to work for the betterment of the company as well as its members.

“We’re all aware that cost of living has sky-rocketed over the last few months and obviously our membership at GTT, they have to face the market like anybody else and it’s a welcome move by the company,” he said.

Shepherd also noted that GTT’s customers will see an improvement in services. He said as long as employees know their interests are taken care of, there will be “happy employees and happy customers” The GPTWU will continue to work with the management of GTT to ensure that it remains the number one communication provider in the country.
