WELL-KNOWN DIABETIC FOOT SPECIALIST, DR. KUMAR SUKHRAJ WANTS MEN
STAY COMMITTED TO THEIR SPOUSES citing enormous downstream benefits enjoyed by their
children.
It’s important that fathers know once they are engaged in extra-marital affairs, they divert their attention
from their families (and) everybody suffers. Fathers must know that once they remain committed to their
spouses, automatically they will remain committed to your children,” Dr. Sukhraj explained.
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) foot surgeon wants men to find their feet early in
relationships because starting off on the wrong foot can spell disaster for the relationship and the well-
being of their children.
“You must spend time with your children and that is why some fathers don’t understand or care for their
children. I have set out my working hours from Mondays to Fridays and use the weekends and in the
evenings when I get home to spend time with my family as that is my family time. Even if you are busy,
one must be able to utilise time management so as to ensure that they can spend adequate time with their
family,” he urged.
Sukhraj, appealing to Biblical tenets, counselled men to get their feet in the door early in relationships to
avoid the emotional, financial and other forms of turmoil which wreaks havoc on the perpetrator, their
victims and innocent families.
“The fact that my scriptures tell me that…fornication is wrong and I should not do it, I will not do it. Yes,
there will be temptations but when you are tempted you have to look at the long-term (consequences)
because this is not a short-term effect…because sometimes that moment of pleasure can spoil your life
forever.”
Men must keep their feet on the ground, the diabetic foot specialist advised.
“It’s good to have a little fear in the sense that so if you call yourself (a) Christian, Hindu or Muslim you
should be able to adhere to the recommendations… and one of the rules is that you should not cheat on
your wife. Whenever I see someone approaching me a certain way, I would usually tell them that I have
three children and a wife and is not open to cheating.”
So, for Dr Sukhraj, men must always strive to put their best foot forward for the health and longevity of
their families.
“We must understand that morals and values are still critically important. If you don’t have values and
morals, then you will have a hard time adjusting. However, young people should know that life has
phases: you grow up, you go to school, to university (and) move into responsibility of starting your own
family. (You keep) watching your children grow, (you plan about) retiring so if you consider that and
work through life and fix on those goals, you will not have any trouble. But unfortunately, people are not
balancing their lives,” the specialist noted.
He reminded fathers that their role supersedes footing family bills, indulging in extramarital sex and
acquisition of “fancy things” but being the best role models for their children.
“You have to strike a balance because you can’t work all of your life…or be with your family at home all
of your life because you need to work. But it's important for a…multi-disciplinary balance need to be
there,” he counselled.
Men must put their foot down on behaviours that can ruin family life. By practicing that consistently, they
will be in a position to put their feet up later in life and reap bountiful harvests of their discipline.
Sukhraj has his own private practice too, and lamented witnessing some of his colleagues lost their
families in preference for their professions.
“All some of them do is work and work all the time. In the end their families suffer. If you are blessed to
be a father, perform your responsibility…especially for your girl children, they will not love any man else
but you in the sense that they will always look up to you as the best role model,” he said, motivating
fathers.
Dr. Sukhraj hasn’t put his foot in his mouth with this advice.
And yes, men, we will not shoot ourselves in the foot by following his podiatric proposal.
