Prime Minister calls CDC flood-relief operations ‘well-oiled machinery’

Applauds delivery of 15,000 plus hampers, says thousands more being packed

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, today applauded efforts of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and supporting Government bodies for their round-the-clock work in getting relief items to Guyanese affected by flooding.

The Senior Government official made the remarks at a temporary CDC facility established at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, where food and cleaning hampers were being packed and loaded for distribution.

He said that along with the 15,000 hampers already distributed, thousands more are being prepared.

“To date, you would have known that we have distributed over 15,000 hampers. We have hampers that are being loaded now for distribution to Region Five and tomorrow we are focusing on Region Seven and Region Eight.”

In Region Ten, about 3,000 hampers have been distributed—which the Prime Minister said he would have personally overseen.

“I have just walked through the facility and you can see we have just about 2,500 hampers that are already packed and another 1,000 in the process of being packed. Just outside, there is another 1,500 that has been loaded for distribution. So in essence, this is a well-oiled machinery at the CDC and the operation to bring relief to the impacted communities.”

MULTI-SECTORAL OPERATION

Despite the CDC’s leading role, the Prime Minister reiterated that the response efforts is a multi-sectorial inter-agency operation.

He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and its supporting agencies including the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) are also playing their parts.

“I like to take this opportunity to commend all the administrators, all the officials; public officials, who work at the central government level… Officials who work at the Regional Democratic Council, the Neighbourhood Democratic Council, the Municipalities, because this is a very good example of all the agencies of Government working together.”

The Prime Minister also thanked the Private Sector for its support.
