Heavy rainfall ruins St Cuthbert’s Mission main road

RECENTLY-ELECTED TOSHAO TIMOTHY ANDREWS FACES THE FIRST TEST of
his three-year tenure when torrential downpours Wednesday washed away sections of a newly-
constructed $99M main road into St Cuthbert’s Mission.
“It was sometime after noon on Independence Day that it was washed away, and from my
evaluation, it is a s a result of faulty engineering. The contractor recently laid the culvert and as
you can see its being washed away. This is the second time in two to three weeks,” Andrews
said.

The results of the engineering bungle left many villagers stranded and an outraged Andrews
demanding the contractor rectify the ruin immediately.

The main damage is in the vicinity of the Two Brothers area along the trail which Toshao
Andrews said “broke away” some two to three weeks before. The contractor installed a culvert to
help take off excess rainfall and reduce flooding the thoroughfare which is the only way in and
out of the Amerindian community.

Toshao Andrews is fearful that other sections of the road can suffer a similar fate with another
torrential downpour. He wants Regional Democratic Council (RDC) officials including
engineers properly assess structural needs and make recommendations for enduring remedial
interventions to reduce inconveniences being suffered by its 1500 residents.

“I’m asking the relevant authorities to visit the road ASAP because two more showers like this
will wash away more parts of the road and will leave the village /taxi/vehicle owners and
business owners at a disadvantage and in lots of expense,” he said.

The Toshao said that the road was executed to the tune of some $99M, and he, like many
others are not impressed with the quality. They want the project completed, but at a
substantially higher standard.
