OPPOSITION LEGISLATOR GANESH MAHIPAUL IS TAKING CREDIT FOR THE
SPIKE IN SALES OF THE DAILY AND SUNDAY CHRONICLE when he acted as the
General Manager for a few months at the State-owned entity.
When he commenced acting in the top post, sales of the Daily Chronicle were 3,000 copies and
the Sunday Chronicle, 6,000. In his three-month tenure, purchase doubled, Mahipaul said. He
said the financial records of the newspapers can verify his contention.
“I can tell you that for the three months that I was there the 6,000 copies on Sunday went up to
10,000 copies and from 3000 copies daily to 6,000 copies daily. There was actually 100 percent
increase in sales,” the Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) said.
This was not achieved with government’s financial assistance, Mahipaul said, referring to
misinformation that the newspaper received annual subvention from the administration.
“At no time did the Government give the Chronicle money. The Guyana Chronicle is run by the
monies that the paper generates. At no time does government give them any release or
subvention, it has always been monies from the newspaper that they sell and other fundraising
techniques,” he argued.
Mahipaul said that by the time the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) coalition took over
the Guyana Chronicle, he had already implemented prudent management and other excellent
systems to ensure that the monies earned by the state-owned media house are properly accounted
for and prudently invested.
The opposition parliamentarian feels constantly targeted by government legislators, ministers
and supporters because of his very candid political views, referring to Vice President, Dr Bharrat
Jagdeo who accused him of earning three salaries simultaneously under the David Granger
administration.
Mahipaul denied Jagdeo’s claims.
“You see I am one of the most outspoken parliamentarians from the opposition side, and I am not
afraid to call a spade a spade. I believe that because of my outspokenness and because of my
candid behavior in the National Assembly where I call a spade a spade, the PPP will try to
tarnish my record,’ Mahipaul said.
He accused the Irfaan Ali administration of vicious social media rumours claiming he sold his
duty-free concession.
“I laughed when I saw that. It was so funny that I went and took out a picture in my own car
which is a Nissan Note 2020. I said here I am with my Land cruiser heading to parliament.
Guyanese (seem to enjoy) sensationalism and because of that the sensational aspect of things will
take its course.,” the first-time legislator noted.
“I am a Member of Parliament. I am entitled to duty-free concession and I will be buying a new
vehicle. I have not decided what type,” Mahipaul said.
