TIMEHRI DOCS RESIDENTS HAVE POOLED THEIR TECHNICAL SKILLS AND
FINANCIAL RESOURCES to transform their community beyond recognition and appealed to
Central Government for assistance to do so.
The East Bank Demerara residents have formed a group, ‘Touch De Streets’ to spearhead the
development drive, group leader, Mr. Ron Williams explained.
“(W)hat it (the street’s name) really means is that we the residents would come out whenever
there is need to and get work in the streets and around our community done, so we name it
‘Touch De Streets’”.
“We would also use our own money to buy some of the materials and even purchase snacks for
those volunteering as we use this as a means of motivating residents to contribute their time and
energies to uplift and build the community,” Williams said.
Despite the challenges, Williams said they are committed to improving the quality of life for
residents, especially the children.
“There have been many instances where there were large rubbish heaps within the community
and we came out and helped in removing them. When we come out, we would clean it up and
pack the rubbish in bags and take them down by the riverside. We do a lot of self-help as we are
trying to get the place up to standard. It’s for the kids, it’s for the community and it’s all good,”
the group leader said.
Timehri Docs residents who have hailed the government’s development plan, believing that they
can play a meaningful role in helping to bridge the historic racial problems that continue to
divide the country and impede its national development efforts.
“We the residents in Timehri Docs have said numerous times that we have been seeing progress
by the new administration and believe that more persons should give them an opportunity to get
more done. The truth is that when the government took office many persons were somewhat
skeptical of what to expect. But within the six months, there have been a lot of achievements that
have been made. As such, we would like to repeat again that we have noticed progress and
believe that they deserve all the commendation that they can get,” another member, Mr. Lennox
Thompson, said.
For them, progress is evident with the new government and they want to share in a part of
the progress within their own community, Thompson and Williams agreed.
