Zombies in business

IF ONE WERE TO TRUST the invoices presented by Regional Procurement Officer, Corwin
Grandison, then one must believe there was ongoing business between the Demerara/Mahaica
(Region Four) Council and zombies in Bachelors Adventure (BA).
Several of the addresses on invoices that are part of an ongoing probe in spending by the
Regional Democratic Council (RDC) turn out to be the location of the cemetery in BA, a village
on the East Coast corridor.
“So far from what we are suspecting there is widespread corruption taking place and as
investigators go deeper, more evidence is being unearthed,” a source told
www.aroundthwregions.com.
So far, “going deeper” doesn’t appear to require exhumation of any of those resting peacefully in
the BA cemetery.
A probe was ordered into past spirited spending by the Region Four RDC after several ‘red flags’
emerged when the authorities examined contracts for infrastructural projects undertaken in the
most populous of the 10 Administrative Regions.
The Ministry of Local Government ordered Grandison sent on leave to facilitate investigations
into suspicious voodoo-like business involving officials of the Region Four RDC.
So far, investigators have positively tied some contracts issued for meals to Grandison and a
relative of former Regional Chairman, Ms. Genevieve Allen.
A source close to the probe told www.aroundtheregions.com that Grandison, who many felt were
unqualified and unsuitable for the portfolio, had little supervision executing the sensitive

procurement task. As a consequence, many RDC employees now feel they were put in jeopardy
and want to be grilled by investigators.
“It is simple to understand, there was no monitoring and supervising of what was taking place, so
the Procurement Officer aided by others did their own thing,” an employee speaking under
conditions of anonymity, stated.
“It came as a shock when the Procurement Officer was sent on leave. Many never expected this
to happen and now persons are nervous because there are lots of persons who were involved in
some way or the other with what took place here,” a source explained.
It is not yet clear whether Regional Executive Officer (REO), Ms. Pauline Lucas was aware of
the existence of several of the suspicious invoices done in the name of the dead. Sources though,
linked several of the shady documents to Grandison.
Several senior RDC officials were unavailable for comment, but two of those contacted said that
while they have some idea of what is going on, they are reluctant to comment for fear that the
matter might becoming a full-blown criminal investigation.
“This is a really big situation, and I would rather you speak to someone else instead of me
as this is plenty trouble,” one of the contacted officials said.
